Research and Analysis of Gaps, Opportunities, and Recommended Pathways toward Using Artificial Intelligence to Accelerate Materials and Manufacturing Innovations

Abstract

The proposed research project includes two overarching goals. The first goal encompasses research and analyses centered about identifying the unique needs and the key opportunities for leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) to accelerate next-generation materials and/or manufacturing-related research and development. The second goal involves research and analyses to support recommendations that will help drive significant scientific and technological progress in this rapidly developing field within the next 3 to 5 years. The project principal investigators (PIs) will assemble a team of internationally known subject matter experts, and compile and organize various research findings, background information, and articles to provide a strong, common foundation for this work. From this basis, the project will consist of three main tasks. The first task - Background Study/Research - is to determine the state of the art in the use of AI in materials and manufacturing innovations. In the second project task - Research and Analyses of Gaps, Opportunities, and Broad Recommendations - the PIs and expert team members will research, identify, analyze, and prioritize the key gaps and needs in this technology area, and draw conclusions and recommend pathways of research and development to support critical breakthroughs that can help drive this research, science, and technology forward. In the third task - Publication Contributions - the results of this study will be compiled into a final publication, which will be released to the broader science and technology community. The publication/report will not reflect official government positions, nor will it discuss future official policies. Funding
