Unconventional Marine Platforms

Abstract

We propose a two-year project that addresses the development of three related marine platforms that use unconventional propulsion and/or a hydrofoil lifting system. The platforms are (1) a small hovercraft that can traverse inclined terrain, (2) a two-man transport vehicle that uses hydrofoils for high-speed propulsion on the surface, but is also capable of operating underwater, (3) and an add-on kit for a standard rigid-hull infatable boat that provides hydrofoils and electric propulsion. In all cases, our iterative design process emphasizes early development of prototype solutions coupled with rigorous engineering analysis. Approved for Public Release
