Identifying Quality Cyber Warriors

Abstract

The cyber warrior embodies a unique set of traits and characteristics. Cyber warriors often require significant technical expertise; however, the cyber warriors must also exercise strategic thinking, balance multiple, multifaceted, and conflicting goals and consider wide-ranging effects of complex decisions. Given the cost and time requirements of training cyber warriors, it benefits the United States Armed Forces in general and the Department of the Navy (DON) in particular to identify individuals who are likely to excelin cyber warfare early in their military careers. This study will explore common characteristics of cyber warriors and suggest modalities for identifying these individuals early in their careers. The researchers will evaluate current trends and themes in successful outcomes among students and individuals in cyber-related professions currently available in the literature as well as assembling and psychological and aptitude test and batteries currently in use. The traits of successful cyber professionals will be evaluated incomparison to current aptitude studies. The results will include a systematic analysis of current literature, a proposed aptitude battery for cyber warriors. The anticipated outcome of the research is an analysis of current literature to evaluate cyber warrior requirements and the development of a Cyber Warrior Aptitude Battery (CWAB) that may be used to assist in the successful identification of elite cyber warriors.Strategic vision, goals and implementation guidance for the DON clearly identify the necessity of investing in human capital. As the DON seeks to create and maintain a cyber capable workforce, the CWAB project will improve the ability of the DON to identify an elite and capable cyber force.
