The Office of Naval Researchs Cybersecurity Career Awareness Project (NAICS: 541715)
Abstract
[Approved for public release.] Ignited is supporting the Navys mission to build a more robust STEM workforce with the creation of a new Cybersecurity Career Awareness Project, sponsored by the Office of Naval Research. In collaboration with the Krause Center for Innovation and Science from Scientists, Ignited will develop a cybersecurity curriculum for middle and high school students that pro motes greater awareness and understanding of the cybersecurity career opportunities available to students from black, indigenous, an d people of color communities.The innovative new project consists of three main parts:1) Cybersecurity curriculum for middle school students, to generate excitement in cybersecurity and Navy careers, and for high school students, to stimulate the analytical, commu nication, and critical thinking skills needed for a variety of cyber careers. This will include hands-on and computer-based activiti es that teachers can provide with the limited resources available in most high-needs schools. The content will also align with feder al and local educational standards as well as link to DoDEA standards and curriculum in support of military-connected students.2) Cy bersecurity teacher training for the curriculum, including three-day workshops, eight-week summer experiences on real cybersecurity teams in companies, and classroom coaching with cybersecurity and Navy professionals.3) A Cybersecurity Learning Community to keep t eachers connected and learning more about cybersecurity topics and careers. Teachers in the community will develop new ideas, discus s successes and challenges in teaching cybersecurity, and share resources theyve found for students or themselves.With the ONRs su pport over an anticipated three-year grant period, Ignited and its partners will provide amazing new content and powerful profession al development for more than 100 middle and high school teachers, impacting multiple school districts and approximately 15,000 stude nts in the first year alone.
