Office of Naval Research HBCU/MI Faculty Start-Up Program in Materials Physics
Abstract
Office of Naval Research HBCU/MI Faculty Start-up Program in Materials Physics Clark Atlanta University Department of Physics Cl ark Atlanta University (CAU) seeks to advance its capabilities for cutting-edge materials science and engineering research by reque sting funding from the Office of Naval Research (ONR) to support a new faculty hire in the Department of Physics. An enhanced start- up package will allow the new Physics professor to establish a competitive research program that will build upon the CAU Physics Dep artments recent growth in research work focusing on 2D materials for applications in materials, sensors and optoelectronics. The re cent research growth in Physics coupled with a new hire enabled with a supported start-up program will further move forward CAUs bu ild-up of a materials science and engineering (MSE) program. MSE research and education at CAU is built upon a partnership with the Department of Chemistry that has also recently expanded its MSE related work via new faculty hires and external research funding. The ability to hire an experimental physicist and provide that individual with a competitive and effective start-up package will fi ll an expertise/experience gap amongst CAUs vibrant MSE research and educational efforts. This proposal is a request for ONR fundin g to support the start-up costs for a new faculty hire, an experimentalist focusing on materials science, and is one of many activit ies ongoing in both the Department of Physics and the Department of Chemistry at CAU to grow and advance the institutions capabilit ies to emphasize MSE from both the perspective of workforce training and education and cutting-edge research. The National Science Foundation supported RISE program has provided support for the implementation of a joint Materials Science programs between Chemist ry and Physics. In addition to existing faculty in both departments who have active MSE oriented research activities, the Chemistr y Department has recently hired a theoretical chemist. Physics has a theoretical physicist in the area of materials science. CAU stu dents will benefit immensely from someone with more hands-on experience such that an experimental physicist in the area of condensed matter/materials is desired. This will also have the effect of lowering the mean age of the faculty and thus ensuring the vitality and stability of the department. The proposal describes current MSE research facilities, the NSF-RISE program, existing and in-dev elopment MSE courses, current MSE research activities, and the projected research activities and program of the proposed hire for th e Physics Department.
