A constant-temperature anemometer for off-body measurements in a hypersonic wind tunnel

Abstract

Funding is requested for a constant-temperature hot-wire anemometer system (CTA) for off-bodyand free-stream measurements in supers onic and hypersonic wind tunnels at the University of Arizona(UArizona), a DEPSCoR-eligible institution. At present, UArizona is li mited to Pitot probesand schlieren for off-body measurements. Pitot probes are generally larger with lower frequencyresponse than CTA, while schlieren often features a low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), has difficultymeasuring 3D structures, and measures density gradient, which is not as readily useful as pressureor velocity. CTA therefore fills a hole in the measurement capabilities in the se tunnels. The primaryapplication will be off-body boundary-layer measurements and free-stream noise characterization.CTA probes are also notoriously fragile in hypersonic flows, Therefore, the ability to manufactureand repair probes on-site is of great impor tance to implementing these measurements in asustainable way. Several standard probe bodies of various designs will be purchased as well asthe components for a workstation to repair them as needed and manufacture custom designs thatconform to the requirements o f future experiments. This will also allow experimentation with alternativewire materials which may prove to be more effective at h igh temperatures than some moretraditional materials. The system is composed of multiple components to enable CTA measurements in t he windtunnels as well as probe construction, repair, and characterization. This includes the CTA systemand associated signal cond itioning devices as well as a probe construction/repair workstation with
