Phantom Echo Generator Development and Testing

Abstract

GTRI is developing and testing a phantom echo generator (PEG), a device which can receive, modulate, and transmit acoustic signals f rom marine mammals. Under a previous effort, GTRI developed a prototype PEG. In this effort GTRI will provide the PEG to collabora tors for testing, and will improve robustness and functionality of the prototype system. The PEG system will be used by collaborato rs within the marine mammal research community to test new hypotheses about marine mammal cognition which will improve fundamental u nderstanding of marine mammal cognition and sensing strategies, and has the potential to impact sonar design and sensing strategies.
