Femtosecond Fiber Laser Engine for Multiscale Multiphoton 3D Direct Laser Writing
Abstract
This DURIP research equipment request is for a femtosecond fiber laser which will form partof a multiscale multi-photon lithography system that we have configured in our group at NU toenable multiscale fabrication and integration of photonic sensor systems. The requestedequipment consists of a femtosecond fiber laser which will supplement a twenty-year old benchtopfemtosecond laser system that has currently been repurposed for multiscale multiphoton 3Ddirect laser writing. This system will enable us to create 3D prin ted micro-optical devices inoptical glass with low loss and will significantly expand capabilities as we create next-generationpho tonic sensors for chemical sensing and structural health monitoring.Photonics plays an increasingly important role in diverse field s such as structural healthmonitoring, biomedical and industrial sensing, telecommunications, 3D additive manufacturing, and even o ptical computing. Photonics could play an even larger role than at present providedrobust methods for 3D fabrication of photonic co mponents can be developed. Technology tocreate 3D printed polymer photonic components is now available. However, for high Q and low lossphotonic devices, direct laser writing in optical quality glass is a necessary next step. Thislaser system will have the neces sary energy and power stability to develop such sensors. On the research front, the requested equipment will be of immediate use in ongoing andproposed projects at NU in the area of photonic sensing for structural health monitoring fundedby the ONR. On the educ ation front, it will be of use in several graduate level courses onMultifunctional Materials and Structural Health Monitoring. It w ill also help train the USworkforce in advanced 3D printed photonic systems and help address a key goal identified in theNational Photonics Initiative to retain photonics manufacturing and packaging expertise withinthe US.THIS ABSTRACT IS PUBLICALLY RELEASABL E
