Improved Dockside Capability for Equipment Transfer at FAU SeaTech Facility in Support of DoD-Funded at-sea Research and Education

Abstract

Funding is requested to improve the dockside capability at Florida AtlanticUniversitys SeaTech facility for movement and transfer of equipment from thelaboratoryto dockedresearchvessels.Specifically,itisproposed toacquireanewdoc ksidecrane andaforklifttruck to replaceexistingonesthatarenowoldand inneedofreplacement. Theseassets providesupport for significant DoD-fundedat-searesearch,including testinganddevelopmentofoceantechnologies andAUVandUSVoperations.R eplacementcrane and forklift truckwithrequiredcapabilities have beenidentifiedforacquisition. They willsignificantlyimprov efacilitiesatSeaTechfor atseaoperationsinsupportofDoD-relevantresearchandresearch-relatededucation.Theproposedknuck lecranehascapacityforlifting2,850lbsat25ft andtheforklifttruck has a capacity for 5000lbs and can navigate throu gh labs. The proposedacquisitions willfacilitateat-seaoperationsinsupportofthefollowingongoingDoDresearchprojectsan daDOEprojectofinteresttoDOD: USVsinSupportofMulti-VehicleMulti-DomainMaritimeAutonomy (Sponsor:ONR;Award:N00014 1812212;PeriodofPerformance:2018-23); NEEC:GeomagneticandBathymetryBasedNavigationSystemforAUV(Sponsor:NAVSEAinco llaborationwithNSWC-PanamaCity;Award:N001742010017;PeriodofPerformance:2020-23; Low-FlowMarineHydrokineticTurbinefor SmallAutonomousUnmannedMobileRechargeStations (Sponsor:DepartmentofEnergy;AwardDEEE0008636;PeriodofPerformance:7/1/ 2019 6/30/2022)Theacquisitions willalsobenefitotherongoingresearchanddevelopmentofacousticsensorsandotherseveralD oD-relevanttopics aswellassupportcollaborationwithNSWC-CarderocksSFOMFfacilityandNSWC-PanamaCity.Further, they wille nableat-sea testing of senior design projects at FAU, many of which originate in Navylaboratories duringNREIPinte rnshipsandsupporttheNNRNEeffort.
