An Ultrafast Testbed for Comprehensive Characterization of Photonics, Electronic, and Optoelectronic properties of Integrated Nanophotonic Structures

Abstract

A comprehensive characterization testbed based on an ultrafast optical pump-probe static system is proposed for the real-time charac terization and stimulation of reconfigurable integrated photonic nanostructures. The proposed testbed enables simultaneous stimulati on of the reconfigurable material inclusions (with deep subwavelength features) using electrical, optical (or both) stimuli and char acterization of the optical and optoelectronic properties of the resulting devices. The proposed testbed can be used for independen t material and/or device characterizations and (most importantly) the investigation of the real-time dynamics of reconfiguration in a large class of reconfigurable nanostructures with different structural architectures and material inclusions. The high-level oper ation of the proposed testbed is based on the optical excitation (using a pump beam) of an ultra-miniaturized nanostructure (e.g., f ormed using a reconfigurable material, e.g., a phase-change material) for reconfiguration of its optical properties while another op tical beam (i.e., the probe beam) monitors the input-output optical characteristics of the reconfigurable nanophotonic device. The p roposed characterization testbed will facilitate several existing and pending DoD-funded projects. It will also be an enabling platf orm for the development of ultra-compact and low-power photonic and optoelectronic nanostructures for a large range of applications (e.g., imaging, spectroscopy, signal processing, and computing), which can be the topics for new DoD-funded programs. The tool will be also available to other research groups at the Georgia Tech campus and outside as a shared facility to enable further collaborat ive efforts in the rapidly expanding field of nanophotonics.
