Testbed for Enhanced Perception and Cognition via Augmented Reality
Abstract
With support from the Office of Naval Research (N00014-18-2927, Dr. Peter Squire, Code 341, 10/01/2017 12/31/2021), we are develop ing new basic knowledge and specific mechanisms aimed at enhanced human perception and cognition via augmented reality (AR). In this proposal we are requesting support for a one-of-a-kind hardware-software testbed that will enable new aspects of our current resear ch, and valuable future research directions aligned with ONR interests. The testbed will offer a unique ability to explore a variety of novel technological enhancements to human perception and situational awareness, both body-worn and remote via mobile platforms, with a variety of sensing and display technologies, and novel mechanisms for perceptually-driven multimodal egocentric (human-cente red) visualization including sight, sound, and haptics, for both egocentric and allocentric (associated with others) phenomena. The testbed will include foundational infrastructure including equipment for tracking and communications, equipment aimed at supporting controlled human subject experimentsboth in our laboratory and in the field, and some time for a technician to integrate the compo nents into a fully functional testbed.
