Workshop on Quality Assurance in Graded Materials for Structural Applications

Abstract

This project seeks to gather a group of subject matter experts (SME) to consider the challenges associated with a grand challenge, n amely how to assure that a spatially-varying materials state and attendant spatially-varying performance in structurally graded hybr id materials is not only predictably understood, but can be engineered and controlled to match the local and global design requireme nts. The primary outcome of the workshop would be to provide material for, and contribute to, the development of a technical documen t (i.e., a study) that will assess both the possibilities and known/unknown limitations of this grand challenge space. A secondary outcome would be the the development of ontological schemes, initially amongst the participants, that would enable SMEs from the va rious multiple disciplines to communicate with greater clarity when addressing this (and similar) challenges.
