Ultrafast MIR Seed Oscillator for Amplified Raman-Shifted LWIR USP System

Abstract

The proposed DURIP award will enable construction of an ultrafast mid-IR seed oscillator which will be subsequently amplified in a f iber-based Raman-shifted long wavelength infrared (LWIR) ultrashort pulse (USP) laser system.More specifically, funds are sought for an 18-Watt 532 nm pump laser to make an ultrafast Ti:sapphire laser to pump the mid-infrared OPO-based seed oscillator, which in tu rn will be amplified and Raman shifted to a near-10 micron LWIR USP laser system. The proposed instrumentation will not only facilita te graduate education in nonlinear optics and ultrashort pulse science and engineering, but will also strengthen the existing gradua te and undergraduate instructional facilities for hands-on training of Physics, Computer Engineering and Electrical Engineering stud ents in critical areas of research and education.
