Revised Proposal: New England Seamounts Acoustics (NESMA): Physics-Based Acoustic Field Analysis wit

Abstract

Approved for Public ReleaseA comprehensive and integrated ocean acoustics field experiment is proposed to investigate three-dimensio,nal (3D) sound propagation, scattering and ambient sound field in the New England Seamounts Chain, specifically at the Atlantis II S,eamounts in the Gulf Stream pathway. The experiment site has a number of acoustically important environmental processes and feature,s coupling with each other, including seamount geology, Gulf Stream dynamics, surface waves, internal gravity waves, and pelagic and, benthic biology. Numerical studies and experiment data analyses are also proposed. The research objectives are listed below, and fo,r the purpose of future research workforce development, training of postdoctoral researchers and students is also planned. (1)Ident,ifying and characterizing acoustically important parameters for complex environments for range dependent seamount geology and time v,arying Gulf Stream dynamics;(2)Improving 3D numerical methods for acoustic propagation, scattering, refraction, diffraction, and amb, ient sound predictions;(3)Quantifying joint uncertainty and coherence of a large number of acoustic and environmental variables;(4)E,nhancing signal detection and tracking;(5)Optimizing sampling strategies for environmental characterization and acoustic predictions,.
