Abstract

This proposal is a request for STEM Innovations, LTD to partner with the Naval STEM Accelerator on the development and execution of,the Virtual STEM Boot Camp Professional Development Program for high school teachers in urban and rural schools with predominantly u,nderserved populations across the U.S. The DoD, along with policy makers, other industry, and educational leaders are clear that the, key to future prosperity of the United States is improving STEM teaching and learning opportunities for our children (e.g., Committ,ee on Prospering in the Global Economy of the 21st Century, 2007). Through funding from Navy/Marine Corp, we expect to reach at leas,t 750 teachers in three-years through our virtual professional development program targeting teachers from public and military conne, cted school districts in states with strong Navy/Marine Corp presence including Virginia (e.g., Naval Station Norfolk), California (,e.g., Naval Base San Diego), Florida (multiple Naval stations), Hawaii, Alaska, and North Carolina (e.g., Camp Lejeune area), for a,total of 750 high school classrooms that will be transformed to highly effective STEM learning environments resulting in over 225,,000 high school students in three years that receive innovative instruction including deep connections to STEM. The STEM Boot Camp P,rofessional Development Program will provide a workforce development mechanism for the Navy and Marine Corps to maintain, and/or cu,ltivate a diverse, world-class Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) workforce to maintain the U.S. Navy and Mari,ne Corps technological superiority, through preparing high school teachers to deliver high-quality STEM educational experiences to, their students while also introducing them to the career pathways within the Navy/Marine Corp specifically and STEM degree pathways,, programs, and careers in general. Further, it is aligned with the Naval STEM Strategy priority to develop and retain a STEM-profi,cient workforce andnetwork to drive naval S&T innovation and attract and employ a highly competent STEM workforce and network to s,ustain the Navy and Marine Corps technological superiority.
