Toward Understanding Individuality
Abstract
There has been a long standing separation between studying general properties of the human mind and brain, often called cognitive ps,ychology or cognitive neuroscience, and the study of individuality, often called differential or individual psychology (Cronbach, 19,57, 1975). In cognitive neuroscience a basic unit of analysis are brain networks (Posner & Rothbart, 2007). In differential psychol, ogy the basic analysis is of traits which are thought to be enduring differences among individuals (Goldberg, 1990). Our research wi,ll examine the view that both common aspects of the human mind and traits that differ among individuals can be seen as brain network,s which differ among individuals in their degree of connectivity and plasticity, thus contributing crucial differences in retrieval,of what has been learned and the rate of new learning. We propose to contribute to the integration of these two approaches to psycho, logy by developing an approach to individuality in learning skills. During the year 2021-2022 we will carry out a literature review,of how individual differences in attention and memory networks contribute to learning of new skills and perform one critical new mou,se study. Our report will be submitted by the end of Dec. 2022.
