Seabed Characterization Experiment 2022
Abstract
The Seabed Characterization Experiment (SBCEX) has been active for a number of years and seeks to understand the acoustics of fine-g,rained sediments using direct and inference methodologies, and seeks to improve the acoustic remote sensing of fine-grained seabed a,coustic properties. This in turn improves the use of sonar and acoustic communications in shallow water in parts of the world that h,ave fine grained sediments, some of which are of strategic importance. Toward that end, we propose to conduct at-sea experiments as,part of the multi-disciplinary, multi-institutional effort referred to as Seabed Characterization 22 (SBCEX22), which is planned to,take place on and around the New England Mud Patch in the Spring of 2022. The present PI is serving as co-chief scientist (with Davi,d Knobles Mechanical Engineering) for the greater SBCEX effort. The present proposal seeks support for a number of direct and indire,ct ocean acoustics measurements to be conducted on three research vessels during SBCEX22, in order to better understand the acoustic,s of fine-grained sediments, and to assess and improve the acoustic remote sensing of such environments.
