Ultrafast Laser System for High-Speed Combustion Diagnostics

Abstract

Funds are requested for the acquisition of a high pulse-energy ultrafast laser system. This equip ment will be used in support of multiple funded Office of Naval Research (ONR) and Department of Defense (DOD) projects focused on solid fuel ramjets, scramjets, rotating detonation engines and other combustion devices. The new laser source will be used to perform kHz-rate measurements of temperature, species concentration, and velocity in numerous experiments by applying the coher ent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS), laser-induced fluorescence (LIF), and femtosecond laser electronic excitation tagging (FLEET) techniques, respectively. These measurements will provide key, quantitative information to improve fundamental understanding combustion processes in DOD propulsion systems and to support complementary modeling efforts. The total amount requested for the ultrafast laser system is $506,817
