Under Pressure - Inspiring the next generation optimizing human performance in extreme environments

Abstract

Approved for Public Release: Naval warfighters often need to perform under significant physical and psychological pressure in challe, nging environments. In this STEM education project, we propose to leverage a National Naval Responsibility (NNR), the Office of Nava,l Research (ONR) Undersea Medicine (UMed) program, and showcase research methods, results and performers. Optimizing diver physiolog,y and performance literally under pressure serves as a unifying multidisciplinary theme and student-centered activities are used t,o attract as well as augment the training and retention of a diverse STEM workforce of Naval relevance. In the planning phase of thi,s proposal (12 months) we will engage with stakeholders at the ONR and in Navy laboratories, as well as the National Institute of He,alth (NIH), to build a program supporting graduate student training including exchanges to Navy research facilities and other labora, tories or industrial research partners.
