Dolphin Doctor II: Under Pressure

Abstract

Dolphin Doctor II is a National Marine Mammal Foundation (NMMF) education and outreach program designed to engage K-12 students in m,arine mammal science. Over the next three years, we will expand our existing curriculum on marine mammal veterinary care, Dolphin Do,ctor, conduct Seal to SEAL workshops, and introduce a new workshop on comparative diving physiology called Under Pressure: Dive into, Ocean Science! We propose to enhance and expand our educational workshop, Dolphin Doctor: On the Front Lines of Marine Mammal Medi, cine, which focuses on marine mammal medical research and technology and introduces students to STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineer, ing, Arts, and Mathematics) principles. ONR funding for this project will allow us to provide in-person and virtual programming to o,ur partner organizations and the general public. We will augment the curriculum with the addition of new activities that incorporate, current and in-progress NMMF research, such as remote blood collection andnew techniques for listening to dolphin hearts. In additi,on to our traditional workshops, we will create a series of ten Dolphin Doctor short videos to build a widely accessible and susta, inable educational resource to carry this program into the future. Additionally, annual Seal to SEAL workshops will be offered from,2022-2024 in partnership with the ONR Undersea Medicine Program and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The new Under P,ressure: Dive into Ocean Science! module will compliment the current ONR funded, Dolphin Doctor program and highlight the contributi, ons of the U.S. Navy Marine Mammal Program to marine mammal diving science. This interactive workshop will compare the diving physio, logy of humans and marine mammals. We will build upon the NMMFs current Under Pressure lesson and incorporate materials from the ne,w Seal to SEAL workshop, developed in 2021 with support from the ONR Undersea Medicine Program. ONR funding for this project will al,low us to partner with Outdoor Outreach, a San Diego based nonprofit organization that connects youth from under-resourced communiti,es with transformative outdoor experiences and supportive mentors. The goal of this collaboration is to inspire curiosity about rela, ted STEAM topics through adventure-based, positive youth development activities. Students will connect directly to the ocean by snor, keling and kayaking, then transition to the sand where they will participate in innovative STEAM activities to learn about human and, marine mammal responses to underwater diving. In addition to the development of an Under Pressure guide for educators and online le,arning resources, we will also create a series of ten engaging Under Pressure short videos.
