Establishing a Unifying Artificial Intelligence Model for Generally-Capable Robots

Abstract

The aim of this project is to increase the development and impact of generally-capable robots. Our specific objective is to integrat,e various technologies from artificial intelligence (AI) back into a consistent, unifying robot control framework capable of support, ing a new generation of robots with the basic sensorimotor skills to be competent at any task, and that can understand instructions, transmitted to them by human operators. Built on individual component AI technologies, the model will (i) aim to achieve general-pur,pose behavioral competence in a wide variety of complex, unstructured, real-world environments; (ii) form a coherent decision-theore,tic framework upon which fully-integrated, intelligent agents capable of generating complex behavior and solving a wide range of tas,ks can be built; and (iii) support task specification by human operators. The proposed work is to develop technology for both milita,ry and civil application.
