Towards a Center for Naval Engineering and Research Education

Abstract

Approved for Public ReleaseWe propose to establish a Center for Naval Engineering and Research Education (CNERE) to conductresearch, into key problems of Navy relevance. The Center is a collaboration between theUniversity of Minnesota, University of Michigan and th,e George Washington University. Thisproposal discusses the University of Minnesota planning effort. In this one?year effort, we will, develop the Center plan, associated logistical infrastructure, and conduct research intofoundational elements of the Center?s portfo, lio. We will identify the multi?year research themesof the Center. The computational element of the Center will develop a critical m,ass of studentsand postdoctoral researchers with expertise in high?fidelity computational hydrodynamics andhydro?acoustics. The Cent,er will develop novel high?fidelity computational algorithms, flowmodels and simulation tools which will be transitioned to Navy col, laborators. The researchportfolio will include loads on naval vessels, propulsors, cavitation, fluid?structure interaction andhydro?,acoustics. The Center will develop an outstanding sequence of graduate?level courses, andactively engage Navy research laboratories, and the broader scientific community throughworkshops and visiting scientist programs. The Center will have a strong DEI emphasis wi,th thegoal of increasing participation of under?represented groups in the Naval workforce, and morebroadly in STEM.
