The Common Research Wind Tunnel

Abstract

The ultimate objective of the work described in this proposal is the advancement of CFD models of turbulent flows. This will be done, by establishing best practices for comprehensive CFD model validation studies using wind tunnel tests where both the facility and t,he test article are modeled. We are proposing a 5-year effort that will establish the Virginia Tech Stability Wind Tunnel (VTSWT) as, a ?Common Research Wind Tunnel? ? a highly documented demonstration facility for this type of work. This will involve the experimen, tal and computational study of a systematic series of test flows produced within the facility both empty and with relevant test arti, cles. This effort will be leveraged into a broad international collaboration through a new NATO AVT Research Task Group that has als,o identified two other CRWTs, in France and Germany. Computational teams throughout NATO will be invited to study these three demons, tration facilities. Best practices will be established both through work done locally at the VTSWT and through interaction with the, computational and experimental teams forming this international collaboration.Approved for Public Release
