Stages of complex decision making

Abstract

In this research, we will study how humans make decisions in complex situations, under conditions of uncertainty (risk). Decisions w,ill be between multiple possible choices, with each choice having several features. These features include positive outcomes (reward,) and negative ones (punishments). Some of the features may be the same for different choices, others differ between choices. Many o,f the choices will have uncertain outcomes, i.e. if such a choice is selected, a reward (or punishment) will not arrive with certain,ty but only with some probability. In many cases, the situation is too complex to consider all possible alternatives, so people only, consider some of the available choices. This mental process of selecting only some of the available choices has been considered pre, viously, but it has been difficult to assess which information was actually used and which was discarded. We will objectively measur,e which information people select during this process. Furthermore, we willuse this information to design and execute computational, models of the selection and decision process.
