Abstract
In spring 2023, The Oceanography Society (TOS) proposes to publish a special issue of the open-access journal Oceanography on ?Build, ing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in the Ocean Sciences? that aims to produce a compelling and useful compendium of articles that, provides frameworks for building diversity, equity, and inclusion with appropriate context. As expressed in the report, ?From Repre, sentation to Inclusion: Diversity Leadership for the 21st-Century Military,? the Department of Defense recognizes the value of diver,se leaders and the need for a ?fundamental shift in institutional thinking about diversity.? The special issue of Oceanography will, identify historical and cultural barriers to underrepresented and marginalized groups and will share the successes and lessons learn,ed from programs and initiatives at colleges, universities, and scientific societies, including those sponsored by the US Navy throu,gh the Office of Naval Research, that have sought to encourage diverse young scholars to choose ocean science as a career. Particula,r individuals will be invited to share their stories through a series of one-page autobiographical sketches that are intended to amp, lify the importance of diversity for excellence, innovation, problem solving, creativity, business acumen, and different ways of kno, wing and sharing knowledge, with the goal of inspiring the next generation to pursue careers in all areas of ocean science. Our most, important aim is to provide readers with a valuable resource that will effect a positive cultural change in the ocean sciences.
