Assessing the extent of RMVE ideological and operational presence within the US Military: Comparing
Abstract
The project proposes a mixed methods approach assessing the vulnerability of the armed forces to RMVE ideologies and the possibility, of either individual self-radicalization or deliberate targeted recruitment by extremist movements. White supremacist groups and fa,r-right militia groups? violence is not new, but due to its recent prevalence and lethality, it has become a primary security threat, to the country (DHS, 2020). White supremacists and militia groups use a variety of tactics to both infiltrate military units and r,ecruit members of the armed forces. Policies designed to combat insider threats must be based on empirical evidence. The project wil,l develop an analytical framework for determining how risk factors may be related personnel joining extremist groups or militias ac,ross the political spectrum providing us with a predictive model of mobilization and engagement. In addition, we will develop typolo, gies to identify the scope of military personnel involvement in jihadi, white supremacist or extremist ideology and violence.Approve,d for Public Release
