Rough Wall Boundary Layer Pressures at Low Wavenumber: Phase 1

Abstract

A three-year research program aimed at low uncertainty measurements of the subconvective wavenumber spectrum of pressure fluctuation,s and of the associated turbulent motions in rough wall turbulent boundary layers is proposed. The program leverages a close synergy, with three other research efforts at Virginia Tech. It will generate key results that greatly complement but do not duplicate those, efforts. Our intent is to exploit and extend a sensing strategy based on a new resonating sensor concept that promises low-wavenumb,er pressure spectrum measurements free from some of the aliasing and SNR issues that have limited previous studies. At the same time,, we plan to make measurements of the large turbulent structures of the boundary layer responsible for producing these pressure fluc, tuations using a novel approach with large format time-resolved PIV.Approved for Public Release
