Towards a Center for Naval Engineering and Research Education

Abstract

Approved for Public ReleaseWe propose to establish a Center for Naval Engineering and Research Education (CNERE) to conduct research, into key problems of Navy relevance. The Center is a collaboration between the University of Minnesota, University of Michigan and,George Washington University. This proposal discusses the University of Michigan planning effort. In this one-year effort, we will d,evelop the Center plan, associated logistical infrastructure, and conduct research into foundational elements of the Center?s portfo, lio. We will identify the multi-year research themes of the Center. The experimental element of the Center will develop a critical m,ass of students and postdoctoral researchers with expertise in high-fidelity computational hydrodynamics and hydro-acoustics. The Ce,nter will use novel high-fidelity experimental methods which will be transitioned to Navy collaborators. The research portfolio will, include loads on naval vessels, propulsors, cavitation, fluid-structure interaction and hydro-acoustics. The Center will develop an, outstanding sequence of graduate-level courses, and actively engage Navy research laboratories and the broader scientific community, through workshops and visiting scientist programs. The Center will have a strong DEI emphasis with the goal of increasing participa, tion of under-represented groups in the Naval workforce, and more broadly in STEM.
