Sixth International Conference on the Effects of Noise on Aquatic Life
Abstract
We request support for the sixth International Conference on "The Effects of Noise on Aquatic Life" in Berlin, Germany, July 10-15,,2022 (www.an2022.org). This meeting, as past meetings in this series, provides an opportunity for the Navy to learn about current re,search in this broad topic and to interact with the scientists, regulators, and others who share interests in the topic. Because th,e meeting presents the latest science, the Navy will become aware of work being conducted all around the world. In addition, since t,he meeting attracts people from many countries in addition to the USA, there is a strong opportunity for discussion, learning, and s,haring of ideas. There is no other meeting venue in the world that provides this kind of opportunity. The major goal of AN2022 will,be to define the current state of knowledge on the impact of underwater noise and, in particular, explore the progress made in this, field in the three years since the previous conference. The extension of renewable energy and petroleum projects to offshore waters,, the prospect of industrial development of previously pristine waters (e.g., polar regions), and recent proposals to open new areas, for petroleum lease (e.g., US Atlantic coast) has resulted in greater interest in the effects of underwater noise on aquatic life on, the part of regulators, industry, and scientists. The need for rigorous examination of the environmental impact of underwater noise, has driven new research into sound sources, their effects, and methods of mitigating their impact. AN2022 will place strong emphasi,s on recent research results, the sharing of ideas, discussion of experimental approaches, and analysis of regulatory issues. Suppor,t is requested primarily to fund students and postdocs, as well as representatives from "third world" countries, to enable them to a,ttend the meeting. A smaller portion of the support is for meeting expenses. A focus of this meeting, as in the past, is to ensure d,iversity in terms of gender, age, and experience, and to include, wherever possible, underrepresented minorities and to provide them, with mentoring opportunities while at the meeting.APPROVED FOR PUBLIC RELEASE
