LIFT - Advancing Manufacturing Technology & Talent in Puerto Rico

Abstract

LIFT seeks resources to create an affiliate facility and program in Puerto Rico (LIFT P.R.), which will have two primary objectives:,1.U.S. Security: The outsourcing of U.S. manufacturing has left our nation vulnerable from many perspectives ? critical goods, techn, ological know-how, manufacturing infrastructure, etc. The next phase of LIFT will build upon the existing manufacturing foundation i,n Puerto Rico to close the gaps in our manufacturing ecosystem.2.Puerto Rico Economic Development: Building upon a strong base, LIFT, will enhance Puerto Rico?s capacities in the aerospace, defense and medical device clusters and help expand its manufacturing capab, ilities into new sectors that will both enhance U.S. national security and increase Puerto Rico?s economic resiliency. LIFT, in part, nership with the Department of Economic Development and Commerce of Puerto Rico (DDEC), will bring a proven accelerator to advance i,nnovative material production and manufacturing technologies by bridging applied research and product commercialization for material,s, processes, and system applications. Bringing world-class advanced manufacturing technology development capabilities to Puerto Ric,o provides a significant economic asset that will expand competitiveness, manufacturing readiness, economic, and workforce growth. L,IFT will prepare the workforce with advanced manufacturing skills enabling local industry to commercialize innovative technologies a,nd manufacture tomorrow?s products thereby creating a more diverse, equitable and inclusive national manufacturing ecosystem attract, ing additional high-tech assets to the region. The program will prepare Puerto Rico?s workforce for the infusion of advanced manufac, turing technologies, processes, and systems, including but not limited to advanced precision manufacturing, data analytics, digital, twin, and robotics. Demand for advanced technology skills is increasing due to the rapid infusion of new technological advancements,, and Puerto Rico is uniquely qualified due to significant manufacturing infrastructure, skilled manufacturing labor, highly competi, tive labor rates, and a favorable regulatory environment. LIFT P.R. will leverage the institute?s existing membership of over 300 in,dustrial, academic, and governmental entities and use the funds to support its initial set of programs targeting applied technology, research, ecosystem development, talent enhancement, and project management in the advanced manufacturing space. In addition to LIF,T?s existing membership ecosystem, LIFT brings over $250M of previous institute investments which established the working models for, a successful institute which forecasted will generate over $70B of return on investment over the next two decades for the advanced, manufacturing sectors in the defense, aerospace, and mobility industries. LIFT will execute their proven strategies in Puerto Rico, to empower and accelerate the ideation, development and commercialization of new manufacturing processes, technologies, materials,, and talent strengthening Puerto Rico?s industrial and defense manufacturing base.
