Enhancement of the Matched Index of Refraction Facility

Abstract

We are proposing to upgrade a large (and very expensive) facility that was donated to us to build a unique Moderate-Sized water Tunn,el that can reach Reynolds numbers above the inner-outer scales separation limit. This facility will complement our new eXtra Smoot,h Pipe. Thanks to investment from ONR in our laboratory, we have advanced optical diagnostics and are now able, for the first time,, to instrument the scales that will be reached within these two facilities, which is a feat in itself. It is also remarkable that t,his can be achieved for a budget that fits within a modern DURIP grant. In short, this new facility will create a truly unique labo, ratory to study high-Reynolds number wall-bounded flows in the Nation?s Capital. The location will guarantee a broad engagement fro,m the scientific and naval hydrodynamics community.
