AI for Scientific Discovery: Toward an International Grand Challenge - A Workshop
Abstract
A committee of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will organize a workshop to explore and lay a foundatio,n for establishing an international grand challenge in the use of artificial intelligence (AI) for scientific discovery. The worksho,p will include (1) emerging AI capabilities and breakthroughs in intelligent autonomous discovery; (2) specific opportunities for in,telligent autonomous discovery or ?AI Scientists? in two to three exemplar scientific disciplines; (3) necessary competencies and po,ssible roadmaps for making progress in those disciplines; (4) measuring progress in the use of AI for scientific discovery; (5) ethi,cal considerations, global perspectives, and the establishment of international norms; and (6) standards and opportunities for colla,boration. The workshop will be held in mid-2023 in Washington D.C. and will involve 30-40 U.S. and International leaders in academia,, government, and industry. A rapporteur-authored proceedings-in-brief willproduced.
