CyberSMART: Cybersecurity in a SMART World

Abstract

CyberSMART: Cybersecurity in a SMART World is a 2-week project-based and standards-aligned program for grades 9 - 12 that places cybersecurity in the context of a world dominated by networks and connected devices. It provides students with an authentic, working understanding of key areas of cybersecurity relevant to the Navy and introduces them to career role models in the Navy and in government-contracted industries that are addressing them. The program is delivered through Scoutlier, a universally-accessible ONR-funded learning platform that has been shown to improve career-relevant learning and skills, with the greatest gains made by students that are traditionally underserved, including those in military-connected communities (1), and includes the innovative, low-cost CyberSMART kit that provides students with a visual and tactile experience of key cybersecurity concepts. It will be piloted with 500 students (grades 9 - 12) in multiple public school districts in Tampa, FL in the 2022 - 2023 school year and has the potential to scale nation-wide.
