Korea-USA International Collaborative Observations of Marine Fog for Project Fatima (Fog and Turbulence Interactions in Marine Atmosphere)
Abstract
Fog consists of suspended water droplets or ice crystals in the lower atmosphere formed by favorable collusion of dynamic, microphysical, physicochemical, thermodynamic and surface processes, and is identified by conditions with near-ground visibility less than 1km. Fog affects societal functions such as transportation, communications and ecosystem wellbeing. In addition, characterization ofthe fog environment is imperative for directed high energy laser, free-space optics and remote detection applications critical to the DoD. Considering such critical applications and the difficulty of accurate fog prediction, a research program is afoot on marine fog, funded by the Office of Naval Research (ONR) as a Multidisciplinary University Research Initiative (MURI). Dubbed Fatima (Fog and Turbulence Interactions in the Marine Atmosphere), this program heavily draws on two marine fog field experiments conducted in areas of the world#s highest non-polar summer fog frequencies: the Grand Banksand the Yellow Sea. These campaigns were to deploy research vessels and capitalize on existing fixed platforms. Multitudes of point, profiling and remote sensors pooled from participants are being used to conduct measurements across relevant space-time scales, guided by high resolution modeling and NWP forecasts. The campaign in Grand Banks was successfully completed in July 2022, and preparations are underway for the Yellow Sea campaign in 2023 summer, which is a collaborative effort between the Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology (KIOST) and US (Fatima) groups coordinated and assisted by the Geosystems Research Corporation. This proposal requests funding from ONR to secure ship time for the 2023 Yellow Sea field campaign, the platform of choice being the R/V Onnuri belonging to KIOST.
