2023 Coastal Ocean Dynamics Gordon Research Conference and Seminar
Abstract
The funds requested will provide a partial contribution toward attendee costs for the Gordon Research Conference (GRC) and Gordon Research Seminar (GRS) on #Coastal Ocean Dynamics# to be held at Bryant University in Smithfield, Rhode Island, from June 17-23, 2023.This GRC, convened every four years in a retreat setting, brings together diverse academic, federal and international researchers to share the latest advances and identify new challenges in coastal dynamics. ONR has a long track record of supporting attendee participation in this conference. The GRS is distinct, complementary 2-day meeting that precedes the full GRC that specifically targets professional development and mentoring of students and early career scientists.Detailed information on three-dimensional oceanic physical conditions is vital to awareness of the coastal ocean battlespace environment. The rigorous assimilation of remotely sensed and in situ observations in numerical ocean models is a powerful tool for analyzing this environment, and models are the primary toolsavailable for predicting conditions that define the acoustical environment, ocean temperature, and waves and currents that impact maritime operations. When integrated with ecosystem and/or sediment transport models, capabilities for analyzing and predicting environmental optics and geomorphology are achieved. The conference chairs, elected by attendees at previous GRCs, have formed a Program Committee that has invited leading researchers to feature novel and recent developments in the understanding of circulation and fluid dynamical processes in the coastal ocean from observational and numerical experiments. Here the term #coastal# refers to estuarine, littoral zone, continental shelf, and shelf-break regions, including mesoscale exchange processes with the adjacent deep-ocean or marginal seas. The scheduled session topics are: Predictability of the Coastal Ocean; Nearshore Dynamics; Dynamics of Tropical and Temperate Estuaries; Shelf-Deep Ocean Exchange; Connecting Coastal Physics, Biogeochemical Dynamics, and Climate Impacts; Coastal SeaLevel Variability; Subterranean Estuaries/Groundwater Exchange; High-Latitude Shelf Dynamics; and Novel Approaches to Observing in Coastal Systems. Discussion Leaders have been recruited who will stimulate and moderate discussion. As session chairs, the Discussion Leaders are also charged with working in advance with the speakers to ensure presentations address new and thought-provoking material and minimize review of existing work.
