Advantages of Extremely Reliable Locations and Censusing of Sounds Compared with Conventional Techniques

Abstract

The advantages of a modern and reliable approach for locating and counting sounds in the ocean will be be illuminated with comparisons with traditional approaches thought to have large errors. Locations and counts will be derived from measurements of the time-differences of arrivals (TDOA) of sounds between widely separated receivers in the ocean. The modern approach is unique because it yields 100% confidence intervals of location always containing the true answer for location in both simulations and independent evaluation with real data. Sounds to be located include whale vocalizations in the Virginia and Maryland wind-farm lease areas as well as sounds generated by electronic sources at known locations. Reliable locations derived with TDOA have many applications including environmental stewardship and sonar.
