High Power Coherent Breadboard Blue Diode Laser System for Underwater Applications

Abstract

ONR Program Manager # Dr. Mike Wardlaw, ONR Code 321Project Abstract (Publicly Releasable)The Navy needs blue laser sources capableof emitting at the power range of O (100 W) or higher efficiently and at a narrow linewidth. Such a source could be used for a widevariety of applications including underwater sensing and underwater communications. Our assessment is that blue diode laser fabrication technology is now ready to meet the requirements of building a compact blue laser source that can emit in the power range of hundreds of watts to KWs, provide an excellent beam quality and narrow linewidth, and very high wall-plug efficiency O (in the range of 25-30% or higher). We are designing and building blue laser communication source for underwater applications such as sensing and communications (ONR Grants # N00014-20-1-2030). Our current design is based on blue, high-power, broad-area diode array emitting 450 nm light. Our laser system will operate at pulsed, CW, and frequency modulated regimes beam combined in one narrow beam for underwater propagation. We are employing OSRAM array that consists of 23 high-power, broad-area blue diodes, each emitting approximately 2 W of power at electro-optical efficiency of 30-40%. The total maximum power from one array is 50 W. These arrays can be stacked to ramp emission power to the level of KWs. We are requesting funds to purchase equipment that would enhance the quality of our work and research-related education of currently funded by DoD projects, will establish new capabilities, enhance our current capabilities, and facilitate delivery of an excellent beam quality, high-efficiency, and high-power laser source for underwater applications. The complete list of equipment is provided in the proposal. This equipment, in addition to our currently existing equipment, would advanceour experimental work and would allow us to better understand phase locking of high-power, broad-area blue diode array and consequently build a blue laser source for underwater applications.
