Promoting innovative research in high performance devices: Lester Eastman Conference 2023

Abstract

Financial support is requested from ONR for the Lester Eastman Conference on High- Performance Devices, which will be held on the campus of the University of Illinois at Chicago from August 7-9, 2023. The financial support requested will be used to help cover conference expenses, and to encourage student participation by reducing registration costs to student attendees, and by awarding excellent student papers. This biennial conference series was originated in 1967 by Prof. Lester Eastman as the IEEE-Cornell Conference in Microwave Semiconductors and commonly referred to as the #Cornell Conference#, shortly after he started GaAs research at Cornell University in 1965. In 2002, the conference was officially renamed as the Lester Eastman Conference on High-Performance Devices to honor Prof. Eastman, a world leader in the physics, materials, and technology of compound-semiconductors and high-performance devices. Prof. Eastman investigated, invented, and fabricated many novel semiconductormaterials and devices. His work led to many breakthroughs in the field, enabling numerous important practical applications. Professor Eastman graduated 125 PhD students, more than 40 MS students, and hosted more than 80 postdocs and visiting scientists between 1958 and 2010. Many of these students, researchers, and associates work in leadership positions in hundreds of leading companies, research institutes, and universities in the United States and around the globe. They have helped shaping the more than $20-billion worldwide annual business in compound semiconductors today. Some of the legendary contributions from the Eastman group include high-quality GaAs epitaxy, delta doping, lattice-matched InGaAs high electron mobility transistor, transistors with T-shaped gates, ballistic devices, and polarization effects in GaN, etc. The Lester Eastman Conference on High-Performance Devices seeks to continue this legacy as a venue for reporting exciting results in electronic device research.
