Magnetic Maps and Models for Alternative Navigation

Abstract

Approved for Public Release-Magnetic navigation (MAGNAV) requires both the availability of appropriate magnetic maps/models, and the effective use of this information. The purpose of this proposed research is to advance techniques for the development of nav-dedicated magnetic maps and models and advise on the most appropriate use of these maps/models in Alternative Positioning and Navigation (Alt PN).Building on work conducted under grant N00014-20-S-B001, we propose three areas of research: OceanTrack - Development of optimum grid production strategies (including full uncertainty assessment) for ocean areas based on NOAA/NCEI marine trackline magnetic data. SCSeval - Assessment of magnetic data grid uncertainty and MAGNAV potential in the SouthChina Sea based on the Magnetic Map of East Asia (Geological Survey of Japan, 2020). APNcoop - Technical support for the effective use of magnetic map/model information in APN simulations and systems.
