Stratified Turbulent Wake Data Collection in Support of Large Eddy Simulations

Abstract

APPROVED FOR PUBLIC RELEASEAbstractThe proposed work will collect laboratory data on the velocity field in the stratified wake of asphere to characterize both the turbulence immediately behind the sphere and the radiated internal waves well aft of the sphere. The data will be compared with Large Eddy Simulations (LES) of a wake with identical parameters performed by collaborators at Cornell University. This comparison will yield a quantitative assessment of the accuracy of the LES code. Comparisons between the new LES data and the previously published results using different initial conditions will also provide insight on how changes in near-wake turbulence impact the radiated internal wave field.
