Equatorial Plasma Bubbles over Palau

Abstract

The Palau VIPIR is a modern ionospheric sounder that is capable of both advanced basic research of the ionosphere, and of real timeweather monitoring of the HF environment. Palau is strategically located within 1000km of the Manila, Philippines and Hualien, Taiwan VIPIR systems and is capable of bi-static and multi-static observation capabilities with those systems. The geographic location of the Palau VIPIR is ideal for studying equatorial plasma physics, and for providing specificationof the complex and dynamic equatorial ionosphere. The Palau VIPIR is also capable of providing real time ionospheric specification for warfighter operations, including that needed to support real time DoD operations. The Palau VIPIR is also needed for the USA to compete with the ionospheric sounding capabilities, and related HF environment specification capabilities of regional powers China, Japan and South Korea.
