2023 High Temperature Corrosion Gordon Research Conference and Gordon Research Seminar

Abstract

The 2023 Gordon Research Conference (GRC) and Seminar (GRS) on High Temperature Corrosion will focus on scientific themes and approaches at the frontiers of our scientific understanding of reactions associated with the exposure of materials to extreme environments at temperatures >500?C. The influence of microstructural and interfacial stability, reaction pathways in single- and multi-reactant systems, and fundamental processes all affect the growth and integrity of protective surface products. Hence daunting scientific challenges must be addressed to gain the understanding to develop and specify materials that surpass current performance limits of materials and to accurately predict lifetimes associated with specific environmental conditions. Such work is mission critical to the U.S. Navy since material reliability and durability under extreme high temperature environmental conditions often limit the performance of marine and aeronautical engines.Fundamental knowledge and associated modeling and engineering developments are essential in making progress towards solving the problems of high temperature materials corrosion. The GRC provides the ideal forum for scientificdiscourse and exchange of ideas among researchers at all stages of their career including students. Research and development related to high temperature corrosion is technologically motivated by ever higher temperatures and pressures and more aggressive operatingconditions, often driven by requirements to increase performance and/or energy efficiency, protect structures, and minimize environmental impact. Presentations will be invited from experienced and emerging scientists with expertise in the areas described above, together with the application of advanced experimental and modeling approaches that hold the potential for establishing the fundamental parameters that control high temperature corrosion and associated material lifetimes. Posters will supplement these presentationsby focusing on morespecific topics. The exchange of ideas will be assisted by extensive discussion periods after presentations, daily poster sessions as well as informal exchanges during the week. These interactions will stimulate ideas and deepen the collective knowledge of promising new directions for high temperature corrosion science and associated materials development and protection. The 2023 GRC will be preceded by the High Temperature Corrosion Gordon Research Seminar for graduate students and postdoctoral researchers to stimulate interest in this field and allow more opportunities for early career scientists to present and interact with theirpeer group.Approved for Public Release
