Advancing Marine Animal Movement Studies by Incentivizing the Collection and Submission of Satellite Tagging Research Data to the U.S. Animal Telemetry Network (ATN) Data Assembly Center (DAC)
Abstract
Federal agencies have identified animal tagging data (e.g., pinnipeds, sharks, whales, fishes, turtles, and seabirds) aggregated via the ATN as an efficient way to assess baseline animal movement and behavior in support of conservation, and to apply the data to make informed decisions about the environment and the ocean that comply with ESA, Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act, and NEPA. The U.S. ATN was established under the Integrated Ocean Observing System (IOOS) initiative through strategic partnerships with federal agencies (ONR, NOAA, BOEM) and academic laboratories with the expressed goal of advancing the national capacityfor animal telemetry to improve our understanding of the behavior, distribution and movements of marine life. Due to the success ofcollection of data in the past two years, funds are requested by the Woods Hole Group (WHG) to support the ATN Argos Fees Program, which through support for the Argos Data Collection and Location service fees incentivizes the increased collection and sharing of satellite tagging data to support the science community and the increasingly complex questions being addressed using tagging data.
