Marine Omic Instrumentation and Technology Workshop

Abstract

The purpose of the proposed workshop is to survey the technology landscape for ocean deployable biomolecule sampling and sensing instrumentation. The primary objective of this workshop is to convene technology innovators (developers, engineers and industry) to catalyze discussions regarding the challenges and obstacles associated with semi-autonomous to autonomous, deployable instrumentation developed for eDNA sample collection, processing and in-situ analysis. Previous workshops (e.g., Alliance for Coastal Technologies, Envisioning the Future of eDNA Sampling and Sample Processing Workshop 2020) have highlighted the need to convene an engineering centric workshop for eDNA samplers and sensors. This need originated from having many workshops focused solely on eDNA scientists and managers, with little regard for engineering or instrument developer input. Bringing together these target groups is needed to advance the field by enabling discussions amongst instrumentation developers. Coordination between instrument and platform developers is also a necessity for enabling global biodiversity monitoring programs.
