NSBP-ONR Outreach Support Program

Abstract

For over 40 years, the National Society of Black Physicists (NSBP) has developed and supported efforts to increase opportunities for African Americans in physics and worked to increase their numbers and visibility of their scientific work. NSBP has mentored and supported hundreds of physicists at all stages of their careers through programs that offer scientific and professional development enrichment. Funding awarded from the Office of Naval Research (ONR) over the next two years will be focused on student engagement, development, and recruitment utilizing two programs within the organization devoted to professional development: the NSBP Annual Conference and the NSBP Student Leadership Development Summit (SLDS).The NSBP Annual Conference is the largest assembly of underrepresented physicists in the world. The conference is primarily a scientific meeting, and as such, it serves as an opportunity to discuss innovative science, to disseminate new results, and to spark the exchange of ideas. In addition, there are professional development sessions for students, post-docs, and junior faculty. NSBP Conferences also present a unique opportunity for evaluating the needs of underrepresented physicists. The NSBP SLDS is a new effort between NSBP and the National Society of Hispanic Physicists (NSHP) to develop next-generation leadership of underrepresented minorities (URMs) in physics and astronomy. This development summit is to be a concerted, national-level summit that focuses on leadership development, building identity and strengthening the physics community, and training of the next generation of URMs in physics and astronomy. The purpose of this funding is to reinforce the existing pipeline of Black physicists and professional scientists by partnering with the National Society of Black Physicists (NSBP) on existing andnew retention and professional development efforts to support the outreach efforts of NSBP. This effort is designed to improve outcomes for current andfuture graduate students, expose potential employees to careers as government technical staff, and strengthen relationships between the Office of Naval Research (ONR) and NSBP members at all stages of their careers. Funding from ONR to NSBP canbe viewed as a strong effort to strengthen partnerships and facilitate recruitment for Federal employment opportunities of individuals who are members of underserved communities, giving insight into a career with ONR. Interactions with NSBP and its membership through the annual conference and the student leadership conference allow ONR to build connections and ascertain what methods for student funding through NSBP would be most effective in building the federal workforce.
