International SFF Symposium: An Additive Manufacturing Conference

Abstract

The purpose of this grant request is to obtain participant support for the 34th Annual International Solid Freeform Fabrication (SFF) Symposium#An Additive Manufacturing Conference. Participant support will directly reduce the registration fee paid by participants in 2023 and, by doing so, will increase participation. The conference will be held August 14#16, 2023, in Austin, Texas. The entire budget is composed of participant support costs. The costs will be used to offset the registration fee for non-student participants. The total offset will be $15,000 distributed among the participants. The meeting cost is set at $725 for non-student attendees. The anticipated meeting cost is approximately $50 greater than this. The grant will cover the offset for 300 non-student participants. Funds will not be used for food or refreshments. Benefits to the Navy focus on the increased participation of researchers. By bringing researchers together in the high-visibility field of additive manufacturing, opportunities are enhanced for synergistic collaboration, as well as presentation and dissemination of ONR-sponsored research projects in additive manufacturing in a world-class meeting setting. Meeting sponsorship will enhance the visibility of the Navy through acknowledgment at the meeting and in the conferenceProceedings. This visibility will especially spread to domestic college students since there were 273 students in the 2022 SFF Symposium out of 616 total attendees. The SFF Symposium total income stream for 2023 presently includes potential funding from private industry for social events (~$2,000) as well as a student travel grant from the National Science Foundation (~$50,000). Major income is obtained from individual registration fees which for the anticipated participation will total over $250,000.
