National Academies NSF Decadal Study Participation

Abstract

The National Academies is convening a study committee to advise the National Science Foundation#s Division of Ocean Sciences on forward-looking approaches to guide investments in research, infrastructure, and workforce development. The committee will develop a compelling research and infrastructure strategy to advance understanding of the ocean#s role in the Earth system and the sustainable blue economy. The report will recommend ways that NSF OCE could develop the capacity to respond nimbly as priorities change and new opportunities emerge over the 2025-2035 decade. The committee will also produce an interim report to provide advice to NSF OCE on theresources and infrastructure available to address high priority research questions requiring scientific ocean drilling.Dr. Marcia Isakson would serve as a committee member for the study. Dr. Isakson is a member of the Ocean Studies Board at the National Academiesof Science, Engineering and Medicine and the Principal Investigator for theARL:UT effort for Task Force Ocean. The study begins in May 2023 and produces the interim report in December 2023. The final report will be disseminated in March 2025.
