Center For Naval Research and Education (CNRE)
Abstract
We propose to establish the Center for Naval Research & Education (CNRE) at the University of Michigan (UM). CNRE will address fundamental Science and Technology challenges of the future within the context of naval applications while training a diverse and capable future workforce. The core of the CNRE will be a group of highly talented, energetic postdoctoral researchers, senior graduate students, and undergraduate research trainees who will create the vibrant and intellectually stimulating environment of excellence thatwill define the CNRE. Key elements of CNRE are (i) theme and team-based research and (ii) engagement during education, both emphasizing Navy lab collaboration. CNRE will enable transformational advances in the underlying science and tools while training the scientists and engineers who will develop next-generation platforms. Center activities will include (i) a high-quality undergraduate research experience program aligned with Center research, (ii) active collaborations with Navy Lab researchers while developing next-generation scientific knowledge, and prediction, measurement, and design tools, and (iii) an outstanding seminar series and topical workshops involving internationally renowned science, technology, and policy experts. A visiting scientist/Navy researcher program willbe launched to enable more direct interaction between Navy and Center researchers. CNRE research will be incorporated into the NAMEcurriculum and educational experience. We will do research better, not just bigger. CNRE will develop the NAME of the future. CNRE will be a Center of Excellence in Naval Science and Engineering. Approved for public release.
