LIFT - Hypersonic Thermal Management Research (#5) - Program Increase

Abstract

LIFT, a Public Private Partnership, seeks increased hypersonic materials development of ICME (Integrated Computational Materials Engineering) as a critical core competency for the Navy. LIFT has invested in and developed a significant ICME hypersonic capability and infrastructure via team projects proposing a two-pronged rapid design of advanced future generation materials and manufacturing processes for application in the time frame beyond 2025. Through initial program efforts, LIFT developed significant capability with ICME for ceramics, ceramic matrix composites, and metallics subjected to hypersonic conditions. Specifically, a middleware application has been developed to connect commercial computational materials science software packages together directly and agnostically in a digital chain. This eliminates resource intensive manual extract, translate, and load operations commonly used to connect the results from one simulation tool with the input variables of the next simulationtool, while also enabling diverse teams to utilize theirorganization#s software packages of choice. In essence, LIFT has developed for the DoD a fully virtual material factory and validation suite. It is known as the Materials Informed Digital Accelerator Suite (MIDAS).Metallic systems that have been leveraged to empirically validate the MIDAS virtual factory have been inclusive of commercial off the shelf and novel alloys for laser beam powder bed fusion (LB-PBF) additive manufacturing, wire directed energy deposition, also known as wire arc additive manufacturing (w-DED/WAAM), and functionally graded materials (FGMs) produced via direct current sintering (DCS) of custom metal powders. This subsequent effort will grow MIDAS to FGMs produced via plasma arc welding (PAW) using wire feedstock.ALMMII, the Great Lakes Region#s premier advanced manufacturing and economic development asset, is rapidly becoming the nation#s leader in strengthening the industrial base and accelerating manufacturing process technology. As a strategic regional economic development asset with national reach and as a Public-Private-Partnership supported by the United States Department of Defense, industry (including Fortune 100 and SMM#s) and academia (200+ of the nation#s top universities and vocational colleges), our mission is to empower and accelerate the ideation, development and commercialization of new manufacturing processes, technologies and materials to strengthen the industrial and defense manufacturing base.
