Stories of Women in Fluids Initiative-Anthologies to Inspire and Support Tomorrows Leaders

Abstract

We seek to secure funding in support of the Stories of Women in Fluids (SOWIF) Initiative to bring to publication two anthologies.SOWIF is a grassroots initiative seeking to increase the representation of women in the field of fluid dynamics through recruitmentand retention. Our current focus is to provide a written guidepost for mentorship and to inspire girls and women alike to pursue successful careers in fluid dynamics through the use of positive narrative and scientific storytelling. Our approach is to use a creative and innovative approach to STEM education and mentorship by enabling female fluid dynamicists to speak directly to current and potential colleagues about the work they are pursuing and how they are succeeding in doing so. The immediate goal of the SOWIF Initiative is to publish two anthologies: the first aimed at middle grade girls aged 8-12, and the second aimed at early-to-mid career professionals. The choice for these two groups relies on two complementary strategies. The first addresses recruitment by igniting interest in younger girls to continue pursuing STEM-related courses in high school through the lens of fluid dynamics. And the second addresses retention by encouraging and empowering women to stay within the field through the power of female role models sharing their experiences. Over the past nine months, the SOWIF community of contributing authors has volunteered its time and effort to bring the books to a point where publication of both anthologies is feasible. We are now at the juncture where significant funding is needed to move the anthologies to publication. Through our partnership with Cosmic Writers, a 501(c)(3) organization that provides publishing consulting services, we have performed a detailed assessment of the remaining work and funding required to publish the anthologies. This proposal seeks to secure the funding to enable us to move forward with this step of the initiative.
